2026 Apprentice of the Year: Rosalie Binford
Breaking barriers and building a future in roofing.
When Rosalie Binford chose roofing, she wasn’t looking for just another job. She wanted a career that would support her long-term goals and give her room to grow.
She found that path working for Krueger Sheet Metal while completing the Pierce County Roofers Apprenticeship Program. The program gave her the training, skills and hands-on experience to launch her career. Today, Rosalie is a journeywoman, a member of Roofers Local 153 and the 2026 Apprentice of the Year. She was recognized at the program’s completion ceremony at Clover Park Technical College on August 28, 2026.
Showing up and proving it
The road hasn’t always been easy. As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated trade, Rosalie has often been second-guessed, overlooked and asked why she is there.
“I know I am not the strongest nor tallest, but I have the same work ethic and skills,” she said. “I overcome these barriers by continuing to show up and proving with action why I am there.”
The people behind her success
Rosalie had support along the way. Her instructor, Ryan, taught her and believed in her throughout her apprenticeship. She credits her crew of five years as well. Through both the good days and the bad, she has earned their respect and support.
Opening the door for more women
Rosalie believes more women would consider the trades if they had greater support and saw more women in leadership.
“I don’t think roofing should be solely defined as a ‘man’s job,’” she said.
Her advice to women considering roofing is simple: “Do it, but remember to have thick skin.” She encourages women to speak up, hold people accountable and keep moving forward when things don’t go as planned.
What’s next
Rosalie plans to keep working, learning and expanding her knowledge of the trade. Her long-term goal is to open her own roofing business.
Her story shows what apprenticeship can provide: the training, confidence and foundation for a lasting career in the trades.
